Dimitri Shostakovich is one of the most distinguished Russian composers in the history of music, who increased and ennobled the repertoire for string quartet significantly.
The Quartet n.3 dedicated to the Beethoven Quartet, exhibits a wonderful writing. The sound filling of the instruments and the timbral resources shown constitute an impressive study-homage to the genre. Probably in this composition Shostakovich finds for the first time the genuine voice of the string quartet.
The somber aspect of Quartet n.8 fits well with the treatment of bass throughout its five movements, reflecting different shades of black and vertebrate for the omnipresent motif of the four notes, RE-MI flat-DO-SI. These notes, besides being his personal signature, allow to show the anguish of the quartet and the thoughts of Shostakovich about his city in ruins. This dark sound idea is reinforced by what we perceive as a vignette of history when, at the beginning of the fourth movement, three notes are repeated like an unmanned plane going down, anti-aircraft fire and the menacing buzz of a bomber in the sky.
