Description
Begin your adventure in the mountain village of Canillas de Aceituno, one of the famous “Pueblos Blancos” of Andalusia. Located at the foot of La Maroma, the highest mountain in the province of Málaga, the village is known for its narrow streets and peaceful atmosphere.
Before setting off, admire the authentic Andalusian architecture while learning about the region’s fascinating history, shaped by centuries of Moorish influence. As you leave the village behind, panoramic views quickly open up across the surrounding mountains, olive groves and valleys stretching towards the Mediterranean Sea.
Follow ancient mountain paths that were once used by shepherds and local farmers traveling between remote villages. As you gradually climb higher into the mountains, the scenery constantly changes. Rocky limestone cliffs rise above you while fragrant Mediterranean vegetation surrounds the trail.
Depending on the season, encounter wild rosemary, thyme, lavender, mint growing naturally near the streams, olive trees, fig trees, walnut trees and almond trees. Spring transforms the landscape into a colorful display of wildflowers, while autumn paints the mountains with warm golden colors.
One of the highlights of hiking in El Saltillo is the opportunity to observe local wildlife in its natural habitat. If you’re lucky, spot Spanish ibex climbing effortlessly across steep cliffs, golden eagles soaring high above the valleys, griffon vultures circling on warm mountain thermals, falcons hunting along the rocky ridges, salamanders near freshwater streams, frogs hiding among the vegetation and colorful butterflies and dragonflies.
The absolute highlight of the hike is crossing the spectacular El Saltillo Suspension Bridge. Stretching approximately 54 meters across a dramatic gorge and suspended nearly 50 meters above the Almanchares River, the bridge offers one of the most exciting viewpoints in Andalusia.
As you cross, enjoy breathtaking panoramic views over the deep river canyon, steep limestone cliffs, dense Mediterranean forest, the surrounding mountain ranges and crystal-clear pools below. The bridge has become one of the most photographed locations in Málaga Province and is often compared to Spain’s famous Caminito del Rey, yet without the large crowds.
After crossing the bridge, the trail descends towards the beautiful Río Almanchares. This peaceful river has carved impressive rock formations over thousands of years, creating natural pools, small waterfalls and refreshing streams.
Depending on recent rainfall, discover flowing waterfalls, natural swimming pools, crystal-clear mountain water and quiet riverside resting places. The sound of flowing water creates a peaceful atmosphere that makes this section one of the most relaxing parts of the hike.
Halfway through your adventure, stop at a beautiful riverside location for a well-deserved picnic. Far away from restaurants and busy tourist areas, enjoy authentic Spanish tapas surrounded by nature.
