Castillo de Gibralfaro

Malaga

Attractions
This fortress is the highest point of the city and commands fantastic views of the whole of Málaga. King Ferdinand conquered it from the Moors in 1487 after a long siege. It was originally constructed in the 1340's as a military bastion to protect the Alcazaba palace below, and both fortifications are linked by a long wall that runs from the palace up the hill to the castle. Access is by road from the far side, and there is a shuttle bus from the town centre. There is an interpretation centre which illustrates the former eras of the castle, and it is possible to circumnavigate the entire battlements, from where you get towering views of every neighbourhood of the city, the port, and the coast stretching away in either direction. Most generic tourist shots of Malaga you encounter have been taken from up here as it simply affords the most comprehensive views anywhere. You can buy a combined ticket together with the Alcazaba and its a good healthy stroll up the hill between the two. Maybe not one for the summer months then.

Opening hours are 0900 - 2000hrs June to September and 0900 - 1800hrs otherwise, daily. Closed 1st Jan, 28th Feb, and 25th Dec.
t's free on Sundays after 1400hrs and costs €2.20, concessions €0.60
