Mercado Central de Atarazanas

Malaga

Markets Things to do

Málaga's central market is named after the building it replaced, an old Moorish shipyard that stood here for hundreds of years until renovated in 1868. The main entrance to the market hall is the original arch from that time, though much renovated. Inside you'll find a Pandora's Box of produce, most of it local and traditional. There are three main areas, those of meat, seafood and fresh produce. While it is a market where locals do their food shopping, it is one of Málaga's most popular visitor sites because of its character and colour. Better still, gastro tapas bars have popped up in various corners of the market serving local specialities, so you can snack away while sipping a sweet Moscatel or a dry sherry and take in the ambiance. The history of Málaga is written into the produce on sale, the salted preserves, the cold meats, the rich seafood, the olives, wine and honey all from the local hills. Its a sensory overload of the most delicious sort. Not to be missed. See our full article for more info here.
