Home and Decor Jewellery Alfajar is the Arabic word for ceramics, the production of which reached its apogee in Spain under the Caliphate, and the style of much of what one sees is still very much an echo of the aesthetic brought from Persia and North Africa centuries ago. This gorgeous little shop, close to the Picasso Museum is so rich and enthralling, some visitors take it for a museum itself. On the contrary, everything here is for sale and has been handmade and handpainted in a local workshop. This is artisan ceramic art of a high order, beautifully executed by the ceramicists, the couple who founded the shop in 1998, Jose Angel Ruiz and Lola Diaz. It's a family business, with their two daughters, also contributing work. The ceramics are made to original artisan standards, fired at 1250ºc from earthenware and fire clay, and each design is unique. The influences for the designs draw on the rich history of the Mediterranean and Malaga itself: Etruscan, Micene, Greek, Roman, Moorish, Iberian, and also paying homage to the 20th century's great artist and Malagueño, Pablo Picasso. With four distinct voices producing unique and distinct pieces, everything in this shoop is a mini-masterpiece in its own right, imbued as it is with the talent of its creator and the history of the centuries of civilisations that run through the stones of this ancient city.
