Cereria Zalo

Home and Decor
A Cereria translates literally as a 'waxery', in this case a candle shop. Zalo manufacture church candles and other religious items and have done for generations. Entering this shop is well worth it, even if you have no interest in buying the stuff, as it is a fascinating glimpse into the devotion and vivid realm of Andalucian catholicism. The shop naturally sells a big variety of candles, but also a huge range of religious iconography and paraphernalia. The range of objects and figurines is enormous, and much of it is related to the practices of holy week, which is celebrated in Spain like nowhere else on earth. The Cofrades, the religious brotherhoods of penitents that process every year through the town, are part of a huge business in the consumption of costumes, icons, figurines, paraphernalia, and yes, candles. You might be surprised to know that it is big business indeed, and a visit to Zalo is worth it just for curiosity's sake.
