Museums and Galleries
The Automobile Museum is a shrine to the glamour, sexiness and the art of creating motorcars that take your breath away. This splendid museum is housed in the high luminous galleries of the old tobacco factory, La Tabacalera, in the relatively central area of the Carretera de Cadiz. The collection features nearly a hundred vehicles from the early models, passing through editions of the classic marques to the present day. The models chosen are those that emphasize the car as an object of beauty, an expression of design as well as the functionality of speed or luxury. The museum emphasizes this artistic slant by including cars that were customised by famous artists, but it also surrounds them with items of clothing and design that emphasize and echo the style of the epoch of each car. So under one roof you can drool over cars but also understand the contemporary fashion mores of the people who bought them, and imagine the drivers and passengers decked out in the hats and dresses, as they rolled along a corniche somewhere glamorous. The exhibition is organised thematically with various epochs reflected such as the Art Deco 30's, La Dolce Vita 50's, Belle Epoch and British Classics, plus more innovative modern technologies and various pimped curiosities. If you like cars at all, then this is a must-see museum. It opened in 2010 and is actually the private collection of Joao Magalhaes, a Portuguese collector who has amassed one of the most impressive and valuable such collections in the world. It is open Tuesday to Sunday 1000 until 1900 hours, general admission is 8.50€ with concessions at 6.50€
