Basilica of Santa Maria de la Victoria
Malaga
Just north of the old quarter is an unassuming basilica in a commanding position overlooking the old city. Originally the armies of the reconquest camped here in the 1480's and a small chapel, then church, were built. It was rebuilt completely in 1700 and features some of the most accomplished Baroque decor in Spain. What seems plain and utilitarian on the outside explodes into opulence and extravagance on the inside. If you are a fan of the Baroque, or just curious, the intensity and detail of this church will take your breath away. And there's more, its crypt keeps the theme going in a macabre style, with old skeletons still visible. Malaga's hidden gem is certainly worth a visit.Visit the crypt for some macabre baroque excitement
