Málaga's Cathedral of Our Lady of the Incarnation is a central landmark, and once stood on the seafront by the port. Togther with the fortress behind it, these two buildings dwarfed all else around them until the 19th century. It was started, as were most old churches in Andalucia, on the site of the old mosque, after the Reconquest. Works ceased in the 17th century, though a cursory glance will reveal it isn't finished at all. The entire south tower simply isn't there, as the funds dedicated to its completion in the 19th century were diverted elsewhere for more pressing needs. The interior is an impressive and cavernous space. Less narrow than its Gothic cousins elsewhere in Spain, it is an opulent Italianate Renaissance design similar to that of Granada. Ornate, sumptuous decoration, a huge organ and its spacious design more than compensate for a missing tower.
