This small museum was constructed by the city authorities in the old monastery building of las Mercedarias in this barrio just north of the old walled centre of town. The gallery is dedicated to the work of the famous Málaga painter Jorge Rando, who, while being overshadowed by the more famous Malaguño, Picasso, he is nonetheless a point of reference of international importance in the field of expressionism. Yet another new museum, having been opened in 2014, this clean, smallish and modernistic gallery is the perfect place to focus on work of such clear style and purpose. The artist's work is bold and colourful, at times abstract, at times figurative, it is unapologetic and accessible, and this character informs the museum, where the staff are proactive and open in engaging and inviting commentary and opinion on the work. The museum aims to break through the chilly walls of silence and decorum that often apply, and to make the space relaxed, friendly and welcoming. It has a library and archive and hosts workshops and lectures. A modern concept for a very modern art, homegrown in Málaga. Open Monday until Saturday 1000 - 2000 hours, June - Sept 1000-1400/1700-2100 hours. Free entry.
