La Barra de Zapata is more than a bar, its a modernistic meson with dishes that are visually spectacular, even when it is something as everyday as the perennial Málaga Ensalada Rusa. This ability to take the ordinary to the extraordinary has made this restaurant one of the town's most lauded gastronomic venues. Which is surprising when you see the size of the place. It is an intimate little taberna hidden down a side street between the Cathedral and Plaza de la Constitución, with the Cathedral's lonely tower standing sentinel overlooking you as you sit around small tables or a barrel top, sampling the sublime creations. This is social eating, as you can snuggle into the narrow interior and share plates around a small table, or sit in the street and watch the world trot by. For the local, its a treat to see the familiar dishes taken to the very limit of reinvention and innovation, and for the visitor its just an amazing place to eat that you'd never find back home.
