Description

Leave busy Malaga behind and head into the Mediterranean hills of Mijas in a comfortable Mercedes minivan. In less than 30 min you’ll swap traffic and cruise ships for vineyards, fresh air and the quiet life of a small family wine project. Your first stop is a Mediterranean hillside vineyard at around 400 metres above sea level, wrapped around the winemaker’s own family home. Three small plots – about 900 vines in total – fall down the slope towards the sea. On clear days you can see all the way to Africa. Chickens, a goat, a friendly dog and a few cats share the land with the vines, reminding you that this is a real working home, not a polished wine theme park. Here your guide will use the landscape to explain the grapes, the climate and the story of how this home project grew into a reference for local restaurants. You’ll start to understand what makes these wines different long before you taste them. Next, you’ll drive to a tiny “garage” winery hidden in an industrial area of Mijas. From the outside it looks like a normal warehouse. Inside, it feels like a secret spot: tanks, barrels and bottles from a small producer who cares more about flavour and honesty than about labels and marketing. His wines are not sold in supermarkets or online. Almost every bottle goes to top restaurants on the Costa del Sol through a single distributor, which makes this visit feel even more special. Here you’ll taste at least 6 different local wines, usually including whites, rosés, reds and, depending on the day, more unusual styles such as vermouth, orange or sparkling wines. The wines are naturally made, low-intervention and crafted without adding sulphites, using native yeasts and plenty of patience. To help your palate understand the wines, each guest receives a small individual tapas-style pairing plate with simple bites chosen to match the different styles of wine – maybe a cracker with salmon pâté, a cube of cheese with something salty on top, a piece of Spanish tortilla or a spoon of tabbouleh with spices. In the middle of the table you’ll also find extra local snacks to share, such as cheeses, sliced cured meats, tortilla, crisps and crunchy breadsticks (items may vary). It’s more than just a couple of nibbles, but it’s still a light, simple spread – not a full restaurant-style lunch or dinner. Throughout the experience your English-speaking guide will translate, host and make sure everyone feels comfortable. You’ll talk about wine in a relaxed, down-to-earth way, with no snobbery and no need to know anything in advance. Most of our departures run with very small groups, usually around 8 guests, so there is plenty of time to ask questions, enjoy the views and soak up the atmosphere. By the time you drive back to Malaga, you won’t just have tasted some of the most characterful wines in the area – you’ll have spent the day inside a real story: a family home, a hillside vineyard, a tiny urban winery and a group of people who truly love what they do.
